I've been using free anti-virus software for years, most recently AVG from GRI software. Lately, I have noticed that AVG does a lot of disc read/writes slowing down the system (doing this outside of normal virus scanning). So, I installed Microsoft's Security Essentials and started testing it. It uses far less system resources, and even found a residual trojan that AVG left undetected.
